MISHC is one of six centres that comprise the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) within The University of Queensland. During its first five years of operation, MISHC was financially supported by a number of major mining companies, along with in-kind support from the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy. The original companies providing financial support currently operate as Anglo Coal Australia Ltd, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2008.  Click here to view the 10 Year Review.

Since its establishment in 1998 MISHC has become internationally recognised as a world-class centre of excellence and a leading provider of Minerals Industry Risk Management education for the global Minerals Industry. MISHC integrates risk management knowledge into undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education programs (such as workshop courses) delivered to the minerals industry across Australia.

MISHC, through its industry partners, has developed industry resources that assist with the management of minerals industry safety and health risks. The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was formed in 2006 to establish a process of engagement between mining customers and Original Equipment Manufactures; a process designed to accelerate the development and adoption of leading practice designs of earth moving equipment to minimise health and safety risks. The Minerals Industry Risk Management Gateway (MIRMgate), MIRMgateEMESRT web portal and the National Minerals Industry Safety and Health Risk Assessment Guideline (NMISHRAG) are key industry resources that are feely available online.
